His only son, John Carter Cash, is still living with the fallout.
Speaking with news.com.au, John said that even though his parents were loving, his struggles were obvious.
“I was very much aware of it as a child,” says John in his southern drawl. “It was in his face. His painful addiction was hard to deny, he just didn’t seem present ... to put it rather bluntly, he was quite high.
“So, you couldn’t miss it. It’s a part of who he was — Johnny in a police mugshot or whatever.”
As the singer’s career skyrocketed in the late 1950s, he started drinking, and became dependent on amphetamines and barbiturates, taking massive quantities of the pills to help him cope with a punishing tour schedule.
It’s this addiction to the mood-altering drugs that contributed to the breakdown of his first marriage to Vivian Liberto. Filing for divorce in 1966, Liberto cited his drug and alcohol abuse, as well as alleged extramarital affairs, including a close relationship with a certain country singer Johnny had met more than a decade earlier, June Carter.
First meeting in 1955, Johnny and June quickly became infatuated with one another, however both were married at the time.
It would be 13 years after this meeting that Cash would pop the question to Carter onstage during a live show. Marrying in March 1968, their only child together, John Carter Cash, was born two years later.

It’s this rocky love story that provided the inspiration for the Oscar-winning 2005 Cash biopic, Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. John served as executive producer on the flick and though there was undoubtedly an element of creative license, he’s pleased with the big screen retelling of his parents romance.
“You can’t make a two-hour film and show everything about Johnny Cash or June Carter, it’s impossible,” he says.
“Saying that, Walk the Line does one thing and it does it very beautifully, it tells a love story. So, if I just judge it on that then it tells the love story of my parents beautifully and it’s one I’m forever grateful for, because if it wasn’t for it I wouldn’t be here!
“My mother and father actually got the wheels rolling for Walk the Line with both of them approving Joaquin before they passed away. And my father approved Reese, after my mother passed away. So they were very much a part of it and spent years working on it before the filming got under way.”

John has chronicled the life of his parents in two memoirs, dealing with his father’s adultery and addictions. He also gives a fascinating insight into the day-to-day life as the offspring of one of the most famous musical families.
“My parents were normal, kind, loving people but a lot of the world looked upon them as superstars and put them on a pedestal, which I appreciate. But there’s so much humility that they never lost. Of course, you can’t be an entertainer and not have an ego,” he adds, laughing.
But just as they did for his dad, the pressures of life in the spotlight took their toll on John too. And he found himself walking down a familiar path — despite the privileges of his upbringing.
“I had my own issues through the years,” says the 47-year-old.
Thankfully, John has managed to return to equilibrium, despite these addictive tendencies “running in the family’s blood.”

“I’m in a good place,” he says. “I’ve got a new wife, an 11-year-old son, a 15-year-old daughter and 21-year-old son. I’m clean and clear. I’m dedicated to home, heart, family, sobriety and kindness. Faith is also essential — that’s the way it was in my family growing up.”
It’s another aspect of the multifaceted Cash that is often overshadowed by the rebelliousness and the darker side of the music giant. Yes, he battled drug abuse, but he was also an ordained minister and — in John’s words — a “great scholar.”
“Anyone who has struggled and lived around addiction knows that there’s good,” he explains. “There’s beauty, there’s darkness and there’s the pain of the reality that a lot of people who are addicts just keep on going back to the well. But that’s just a part of who he was. I choose to look at the light and goodness.”
This course of action was also adopted by June. Throughout their marriage she attempted to save her husband from his addictions, often taking his drugs and flushing them down the toilet. Through multiple rehab stints, her devotion remained steadfast.
“They really loved each other, but they struggled,” says John, candidly. “There were a couple of times when their marriage almost failed. It was partly due to my father’s volatility and character and partly due to his addiction issues. That’s part of the tale.”
John’s mother had her own issues. A compulsive spender, their homes were overloaded with furniture, dinner sets, linens and silverware and this urge to splurge is a factor behind the financial difficulties the family faced in the 80s, during which they were forced to sell many of their more valuable belongings. Add to this fears over her husband’s infidelities and theirs was far from an untroubled union.

“But it’s through these struggles that their love got stronger,” says John. “So at the end of their life, it wasn’t the ‘happily ever after’, but they were happy. In fact, they were happier together than they’d ever been. They’d learn to forgive one another and they’d learned acceptance.”
June died in May 2003 and Johnny followed less than four months later on September 12 at the age of 71. The closeness of their deaths is particularly poignant, though John doesn’t believe that his father died of a broken heart, saying that in the period after his wife’s death, Johnny was more prolific than ever.
“My father had tenacity,” he recalls. “When my mother passed away, on the way home from the cemetery after her funeral he turned to me in the car and said: ‘I have to get home to the studio.’ He kept recording and making music — he had such drive. Vocals for most of his last two albums were recorded after my mother passed away. He died with a broken heart, but I don’t think it killed him.”
It’s fair to say that the legend that is Johnny Cash still looms large, both for the late performer’s fans worldwide and for his surviving son.
“He’s in the hearts of myself and my family,” he says. “I feel both their presences every time I walk into a recording studio. I see them every time I look into my children’s eyes. It’s my father’s blood beating in my kids veins. My parents’ legacy continues and it’s a beautiful thing.”
